The Tuscany Life Sciences Cluster
The Tuscany Life Sciences Cluster groups all of the public and private subjects operating in various capacities in the sectors of biotechnology, pharmaceutics, medical devices, nutraceutics and cosmeceutics, ICT applied to the Life Sciences.
The Cluster was created in 2011 thanks to the Tuscany Region with the objective of contributing to the growth of the region’s competitiveness by planning integrated research and development activities around innovative projects, creating a system from the companies and network of excellent groups present in the field of research and technology transfer in the Life Sciences.
The actors of the Tuscany Life Sciences Cluster are affiliated businesses (startups , spin off , SMEs and major players in the pharmaceutical industry ); Tuscany Universities ( Florence , Pisa , Siena ); School of Advanced Studies (the Sant’Anna and Pisa Normale Schools for Advanced Studies and the IMT Institute for Advanced Studies of Lucca); Institutes of CNR ; the University Hospitals ; the local health authorities; foundations, service center, other public and private research facilities.
Some aggregate data relating to more than 190 member companies: over 11,000 employees of which approximately 1,400 engaged in R&D, more than 5.5 billion of total turnover, 37,000 square meters of laboratories and over 800 patents, 32 research infrastructures, 14 research groups, 6 services groups (data December 2016).
