European Biotech Week
On April 25, 1953, James Watson and Francis Crick published the first description of the double helix structure of DNA in the prestigious journal Nature, earning them and their colleague Maurice Wilkins the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962. It was a discovery that marked a significant leap forward in biological research, providing the molecular bases of heredity, diseases, aging processes, and evolutionary mechanisms and constituting the foundation for the development of the biotechnologies. In fact, DNA contains the genetic information that allows all living organisms to function, grow and reproduce. Europe paid tribute to the 60th anniversary of this discovery in October 2013 with the first edition of European Biotech Week (EBW), an initiative promoted by EuropaBio (the European Association for Bioindustries).
Numerous events and meetings on various biotechnology topics that involve institutions, companies, universities, schools, science parks, museums, theaters, foundations and associations are organized each year in Italy during European Biotech Week. TLS also participates in this event, each year proposing different activities such as guided visits to the bioincubator, laboratory experiments, exhibitions and the dissemination of information.

Diabetes scientific research has made many advancements during last several years, by using brand new and advanced technologies not completely known to the general public. We propose to open our diabetes research laboratory in order to present the scientific tools actually used to deeply understand the molecular basis of diabetes pathogenesis. Moreover, we will meet general public in our outlab stand in which children and adult can play to re-construct the architecture of pancreatic islets while learning the basis of diabetes pathogenesis. Interactive presentations of our research lines will be also reported during the entire event.
