Institute of Physiology of the National Council of Research, Siena SOU


The unit of the Institute of Physiology of the National Council of Research (CNR) in Siena carries out and promotes activities in the field of Biomedical and Health Sciences focusing on experimental oncology. Its mission is to sustain and promote the scientific and technological research through collaborations among national and international institutions and industrial partners. The unit works collaborating with Core Research Laboratory of the Institute for the Study, Prevention and Oncology network (ISPRO), a body of the Regional Health System, who’s mission is to promote, evaluate and coordinate primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of cancer and to organize and co-ordinate prevention activities, diagnosis, cure and research in Oncology.
The research carried out by the group incudes studying those molecular mechanisms that regulate cell growth and transformation and that are mediated by mitogen activated protein kinase (MAPK) as well as the study of the role of autophagy in cancer. Moreover, the Unit study and develop new theranostic approaches with the use of multi-functionalised nanoparticles and targeted drug delivery systems to carry active molecules and contrast agents for personalised medicine.

The unit in Siena carries out activity of tutoring and training for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate fellows, collaborating with National and Foreign Universities and participating in project of alternating traineeship (work–linked training).
